Questions for Giffords, AZ 08

Fri Aug 11, 2006 at 09:45:58 PM PDT

I have an opportunity to ask Giffords questions next week at a function.  Does anyone have any questions that I should ask her?

I'm interested in anything about her DLC connections, her ad that was exposed in the Star, or anything else.  I don't know much about her history in the State legislature.

I've been researching everyone tonight, for the last hour.  I went in favoring Latas and opposing Giffords (due to the Star's article), and now I favor Weiss, and still oppose Giffords.  I sadly changed my mind on Latas when I heard about the tinfoil hat 9/11 thing.

This function will be a good opportunity to politely ask questions.  There will be about 50 people there, max.

Thanks!

  •  Hopefully this works in getting information.. (0+ / 0-)

I have to hit the sack now, so I won't be posting.  I'll check tomorrow morning for sure though!!

These minor races are much more difficult to research than the major ones.  I don't think I've had this much trouble learning and researching in my activism.

    •  Giffords for Arizona's 8th Congressional District (0+ / 0-)

I've known Gabrielle Giffords since her first term in the Arizona House.  I believe she is the best bet for keeping the GOP from sending a successor to retiring Rep. Jim Kolbe.

She got my attention in a big way when she was one of only two Arizona lawmakers to actually pay attention to a bill introduced by a then freshman GOP member of the Arizona House.  The bill was a sneaky (and unfortunately successful) effort to get some property taxes rightfully owed by some rich homeowners, in the district where I lived at the time, passed along to the rest of the tax payers.  This meant a major tax break for those benefitting from this bill.

The background and some of the specifics are detailed in a news story published (and found at the URL linked below) by the Phoenix New Times.

So, for me, Giffords was (and is) very aware, diligent, smart and though she did not vote 100% the way I would have liked on other bills, I have also found her voting and debate to be solidly in favor of human and civil rights as well as her being an unwavering voice for environmental protection.

This comes from my direct observation and research of her performance in the Arizona House and Senate.

As a member of the minority political party (GOP controls both chambers of the Arizona Legislature), she has demonstrated that she can get things accomplished anyway.

So, without being overly verbose, I will say that I am convinced Gabrielle Giffords is the best voice for Democrats, Independents (including Green Party voters) and pro-choice Republicans in AZ-8 in 2006.

As to questions for her in person this week, I'd ask her to elaborate on her record/stand on environmental and human/civil rights issues.

I would also pay attention to those who endorse her.  I believe that group includes Congressman Raul Grijalva, who is perhaps among the more liberal members of Congress right now; as well as numerous of Ms. Giffords former Democrat colleagues at the statehouse.

Then perhaps I would also ask her about how her involvement and/or leanings related to the DLC impact her views and actions.

      •  She did good. (0+ / 0-)

I think she won over most of the crowd.  I actually realized at the event that I can't vote for her.  Grijalva is my representative, and he's definitely getting re-elected.

I asked a question about whether or not she takes global warming seriously, and for her to elaborate.  She gave a great answer saying, yes, she did take the threat seriously, and thought that America had it in her to rise to the occasion and lead the world in an Apollo project for energy.

Looks like she's going into the election as the favorite.
