Lies, Damned Lies and Hedonic Adjustments

Thu Jul 06, 2006 at 07:38:27 AM PDT

This has long been a pet peeve so I thought I'd do a diary rather than just post it on bonddad's diary.

As most of us know the government has been coming out with pretty rose economic numbers for GDP and inflation.

What most of don't know is those numbers are manipulated through "hedonic adjustments."  These adjustments are a relatively recent thing which make our government's numbers apples to oranges in comparing them with historical numbers or those of nations that do not hedonically adjust.

Smart car coming to the United States, who wants one?

Assuming they sell it at a reasonable price (looks like the base model will sell for less than $10k) this looks like a good alternative to more expensive hybrid cars.  69 mpg on the highway is pretty nifty.

Israel boycott is final nail in the coffin of ports deal

Wed Mar 01, 2006 at 07:34:35 AM PDT

At a hearing of the Senate Commerce Committee, Edward H. Bilkey, the chief operating officer of Dubai Ports World, was pressed by several Democrats about Dubai's position on the Arab boycott of Israel, following up on a report in The Jerusalem Post that said the holding company that controls Dubai Ports participated in the boycott.

Mr. Bilkey first said the company was not involved in matters of state-to-state policy. Under questioning, he conceded that he believed the boycott was in force at company ports in Dubai.

However, he added later: "The largest Israeli shipping company is one of our largest clients. We serve everyone in many of our terminals around the world."

redfish's morning news diary

Tue Feb 14, 2006 at 03:35:25 PM PDT

This is a personal diary where I will post morning news of interest to anti-bushites.  I figure it's way more efficient than creating a diary for each story, I hope nobody minds.  The idea is I will update it regularly, except when I am gone fishing.

For the body I am posting links to my favorite morning news (and opinion) sources.

Cindy Sheehan charging $5,000 a pop for speaking?

Kind of tacky to make a career out of it, imo.
